Small shops for babies and kids

As I try to prepare for my baby girls arrival in June, I've been doing a lot of eyeing and buying.  What I'm finding is that I am leaning more towards small shops when it comes to buying baby gear this time around.  I love a good deal and I do buy most kid's clothes and baby gear from bigger retailers, but right now I feel that it's really important to shop small and support local small businesses.  Our economy has taken a huge hit with the coronavirus pandemic.  It's really affecting the small local business, so I'm trying to do my part to help them out.

When I shop small, I'm usually prepared to spend a little more money than I would at a bigger retailer, but that doesn't mean I don't still find deals.  The things I look for when I shop small are...

Price- Are their prices reasonable? Do they have good sales and promos?
Uniqueness- Can I find something that I wouldn't be able to find at Target or other similar stores?
Shipping- Do they have free shipping?  If not, is their free shipping at a reasonable price for their store?
Owner-  Is is owned by a  mom/family/woman?  I like to support women/mom/family- owned businesses when I can, so knowing a little bit about the owner is always nice.
Location- Is is a small company in the United States?  I'm trying to support small American owned companies, so knowing the location is important to me.  I also like to see if they are located in my community or a community that I have some sort of connection to. (Somewhere I used to live, have family that lives there or I've vacationed there.)
Philanthropy- Do they give back?  Many small shops give back to their local community and if I can support them it makes my purchase feel that much better.

I've always found it harder to shop small because these smaller businesses are harder to find.  You tend to only hear about them through word of mouth.  That's why today I wanted to share with you some of the smaller shops that I've stumbled upon and love.  These are all stores that I have either shopped at or plan to shop at.  Most of them were found by seeing ads on Instagram or Facebook, or they were recommended by a fellow blogger.

Small shops for babies and kids

Fawn & Foster- Maple Grove, MN

This is a shop that I recently stumbled upon on Instagram.  I'm so glad I did, because they have the cutest baby gear at really affordable prices, plus they have free U.S. shipping.  I bought a couple cute items for baby girl and they just happened to have a buy 1 get 1 50% off sale.  I also love that the shop is family owned and they donate 50% of their profits to organizations that help support children in foster care.  Because I was a Head Start teacher for so many years and worked with children in the foster care system, this is charity is close to my heart.

Spearmint Baby- Scottsdale, AZ

This is another great shop that I found on Instagram.  They have the cutest designs!  I'm kind of obsessed with all their swaddles and newborn clothes right now.  They have some amazing sales and free shipping.  I haven't made a purchase yet, but I know I will in the near future.  I even went ahead and created a baby registry on their site.

BirdRock Baby- San Diego, CA

I've been a fan of BirdRock Baby for a while now.  I've worked with them a couple times and I love their baby gear.  They sell beautiful baby moccasins and so much more.  Their moccasins run around $25 which is much more affordable than the other moccasins I've seen out there, plus they always have a $20 moccasin of the month.  On their site, you will find that they have free shipping starting at $49, but you can also find their products on Amazon, which is always convenient! I also love that this business gives back.  For each item they sell, they donated food for a day to a child in need.

Aubrey Gianna's Boutique- Tampa, FL

If you are a girl mom, this store is perfect for you.  They sell lots of clothes, accessories, and blankets with pretty floral prints and solids colors.  They have reasonable prices and good sales. On their site, you will find daily deals and flash sales.  The free shipping price starts at $75.

Tip Toes- Holland, MI

This shop was recommended to me by a local West Michigan blogger.  I love that this shop is apart of my local community.  They carry everything from toys to clothes from top brands that you know and love.  I can't wait to go check out their actual store location in person one day, but for right now you can check out their website to see all their goodies.

Primary- New York, NY

I recently ordered baby girl a few onesies from this shop for only $5.  I love all their clothes because they are affordable, practical, and super cute.  They currently have free shipping and 15% off your first order.  I like that they always have some kind of sale or discount going on.

Make Make Organics- Pinellas Park, FL

If you like shopping for earth-friendly and organic baby clothes, this shop is perfect.  I love their neutral designs and modern prints.  All their clothes are made with high-quality durable fabrics that are easy to wash.  I appreciate the efforts they take to make such high-quality clothes that are good for the environment.   Free shipping starts at $35.

GooseWaddle- Greenville, NC

This shop is perfect if you are looking for baby blankets, teether, burb cloths, or plush toys.  They have a really cute and affordable selection.  I also love that this shop gives back.  When you purchase a blanket or gift set, they will give away one to a child in need.  They also have free shipping and 20% off.

Arrows & Lace Boutique- Sacramento,CA

This shop has the cutest kids clothes.  If you are looking for something unique or trendy to dress up your little one in, this shop is for you.  I love the little dresses and accessories for little girls.  Their prices are affordable and the free shipping starts at $49.

Itsy Bitsy Baby Company- Henderson, NV

I found this shop on Instagram and I was excited to see that they are from the city I used to live in when I lived in Nevada.  They are a small company that sells burp cloths, infant sensory toys, silicone teethers, and swaddle blankets.  Everything is reasonably priced and you can get free shipping on all $25 orders or more.

Those are only 10 small shops, but I continue to find new ones every day.  I'm excited about my purchases and I look forward to shopping small more often.
